Raising the Roof on March 14th!

As the sun begins to set on February and rise again in March, I can’t help but get excited about our annual Spring Auction, scheduled for Thursday, March 14th. This year our community will come together to help “Raise the Roof” with proceeds going towards our capital expansion project. (Stay tuned for details about this exciting development!) This longstanding tradition at the school has played a critical role in our school’s growth and development over the last several years, and this year’s event holds special importance as its proceeds will help to fund the first phase of our building project.
At All Saints, as in most independent schools, we are faced with the challenge of keeping tuition competitive while offering an exceptional educational experience for our students. The cost of tuition alone does not cover the operating costs for the school, so the philanthropic support of our families is integral to the success of the school and to our students’ academic experience at All Saints. This support is most directly and profoundly felt through parents’ support of the annual fund, but is also important through their support of and participation in fundraisers, none more so than our Spring Auction.

Last year’s auction raised a record high of just under $90,000. In addition to the funds raised, the sense of community created as a result of the event was palpable. Bursting at the seams of Trinity Restaurant, close to 200 family, friends and supporters of All Saints enthusiastically bid on the many items up on the auction block. The most memorable moment for me was when, at the conclusion of our live auction, our auctioneer introduced a new practice for us – the “paddle-raiser.” In a booming voice in the crowded restaurant, the auctioneer challenged, “Who would like to sponsor six iPads at $500 each for the students of All Saints?” I remember holding my breath at first, and then feeling truly moved when not one hand went up, but three! And it didn’t stop there. When given the opportunity to purchase an additional iPad for the school, there was such a flurry of raised hands that it was a challenge to record them all! Walking home that evening along our beautiful riverfront, I was overwhelmed and inspired by the generosity of the wonderful people in our community. Although I feel this way almost daily, that night I was especially proud of our school family for our commitment to one another and to the future of our school.

Now, as our school is positioned for another exciting chapter in our growth as we pursue our capital expansion project, the auction holds even more promise for our community. There is truly something for everyone this year – from foodies to sports aficionados, from wine connoisseurs to art lovers – there will be the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of items. Some items this year include dinner and a sunset sail, a wine tasting and food pairing by Bin 14, a hot air balloon ride, tickets to a Yankees/Red Sox game, vacation stays, and many other surprises! We’re hopeful that this year’s paddle-raiser will be even more successful than last year, with proceeds supporting the first phase of our expansion efforts.

The auction is a winning combination of a great night out while supporting a wonderful cause. Tickets are on sale now, and can be bought through our website via paypal (no paypal account needed) or reservations can be taken in person at either707 Washington Street or at the Saint Nicholas Center.
