Guest Blogger: Bringing History to Life

My love for history began early. I recall begging my parents to take me to historical sites as we traveled through cities on our family vacations. Thankfully, my parents encouraged my interest by taking me on excursions to Civil War battle fields, the site of the JFK assassination, and visits to the Alamo. I learned early that history is best appreciated when it is brought to life. Fortunately, the students at All Saints have this opportunity. Their history lessons are filled with fantastic field trips, exciting stories, challenging projects, and thought-provoking discussions. Step into a Middle School history class at All Saints and you may very well find that the students have gone for the day to learn from real-life historians at Ellis Island, working in groups to research the architectural design of Medieval structures, or debating the successes and failures of Reconstruction.

History is a subject that begs to jump out of textbooks and this philosophy is best exemplified in the upcoming Living History Museum, hosted by the Middle School. Students in Grades 5-8 each select a historical figure to research, and then use what they have learned to dramatically personify each, giving a first person narrative of his/her life or even reciting portions of a famous speech. Through this process, Middle School students bring the lives and stories of such people as Johann Gutenberg, Dorothea Dix and Winston Churchill to life, not just for themselves but for students in Grades 1-4, their Middle School classmates and guests.

William Faulkner famously said, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” Thankfully, our students understand that history is always being made and is very much alive. We invite you to spend a morning walking among the great figures of history by touring our Living History Museum on Thursday, March 29th, from 8:30-9:15am, in the church. Don’t miss this chance to see how enjoyable the study of history can be!
