Resolve to Make Some Sacred Time for Family

As the toll of the New Year bells begins to fade, and the routine of daily life once again creeps into its frenzied pace, I am reminded of the sage advice offered by internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist Wendy Mogel, and author of two of my all-time favorite parent reads, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and the The Blessing of a B-. In The Blessing of a Skinned Knee, Wendy urges parents to create a sacred time for family – a weekly “Sabbath” – that all members of the family can commit to keeping together. Perhaps it’s a given evening during the week, something as simple as a dinner together. But for this dinner, smart phones, televisions and computers are silenced, and the good old-fashioned art of communication is the focus for the time together. Wendy further suggests that at this dinner, families consider a ritual whereby each member of the family lights a candle, offering something for which they are thankful. Sound easy? For some of us, the task is a lot harder than we could ever imagine. But what greater way can you think of to spend your time this year, than to spend it with those you love the most, making them the highest priority for a sacred time each week?
