    Sixth Graders Bring Early Civilizations to Life

    Sixth Grade students recently finished their study of early civilizations of the Americas.  The unit culminated in the Mesoamerican 3D Box Project.  Each student incorporated three-dimensional hieroglyphics, original artwork, and details about the era in their boxes.  They also shared interesting facts discovered while researching the topic.  

    Adapting to the challenges of hybrid learning and COVID safety measures, Sixth Graders assembled their projects in small groups (via Zoom breakout rooms). During their virtual presentations, students were able to travel back in time to get a feel for what life may have been like in these the early civilizations.

  • Meet Alex Schmidt, Academic Enrichment Teacher

    In her third year at All Saints, Alex Schmidt, our Academic Enrichment Teacher, works with students in Kindergarten through Grade 8, providing them with added resources to support their learning.  Partnering with classroom teachers, Ms. Schmidt develops individualized plans to reinforce lessons and introduce more challenging topics.

    Ms. Schmidt teaches students in small groups and one-on-one, in addition to entire classes. Academic Enrichment is a unique position and Ms. Schmidt feels honored to watch students progress not only academically, but also as they mature into young adults over the years.

    Ms. Schmidt shared, “As an educator and member of this amazing community, I hope to instill in students how wonderful it can be to continue exploring and learning, even after they graduate!”

  • Third Graders Work to Solve Eco Problems

    Every fall, Third Grade students try to solve environmental issues facing the community.  Using the design process, the students explored eco problems and experimented to find unique solutions. While some aspects of the unit needed to be altered this year, such as working individually instead of in small groups, the students were engaged and the lessons learned remained the same.  

    During Open Science Morning, the students shared their recommendations for reducing litter and air and water pollution. They demonstrated their thoughtfulness and creativity, while parents watched the presentations virtually.

  • Introducing French to Our Youngest Learners

    World Languages are an important component of the All Saints curriculum and are incorporated at all grade levels: students in Nursery – Grade 4 take Spanish; Middle School students choose between continuing Spanish or switching to French; and all students in Grades 7 and 8 also study Latin.  

    Nursery and Pre-K students who participate in our Extended Day program are also introduced to French. Through play and imagination, the children interact with new, French-speaking “friends,” learn about their lives and build relationships. Simultaneously, the students begin to acquire French naturally with joy and purpose.  They understand that by learning French, they are able to strengthen the bond with their new friends – Monsieur Boulanger, the Parisian baker; Madame Martinique, who sells flowers at the market; Frere Jacques, who needs to be woken up to ring the bells at Notre Dame; and Violette, a young girl, who rides her bike around Paris, giving the students a tour of her beautiful city and all the fun to be had there. This continues with a trip around France, taking the TGV trains to go skiing in the Alps, and to Normandy to enjoy a wonderful picnic at Claude Monet’s gardens in Giverny and paint flowers in his Impressionism style.  

    The goal in these early years is for the students to become more confident and excited to use the language when meeting new people and encountering new experiences in a French-speaking country.  Embracing that which may be unfamiliar is a theme that runs through the entire French curriculum.

  • International Baccalaureate Verification Visit

    We are excited to share that the next phase of our journey towards authorization as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme, which is our verification visit, will occur this month.

    During the virtual verification visit, a team from IB will meet with teachers, parents, students, trustees, and school leadership to discuss where we are in the process and ensure that all stakeholders have knowledge of the IB Programme and, for teachers, the required training. The team will also virtually visit classes to see our IB Programme in action. Following this visit, the team will submit a report to IB, which will determine if our authorization is approved. We hope to have this approval by the close of 2020!

  • Math During Hybrid Learning

    Transitioning Middle School Math into a hybrid learning situation is more than just the added component of live Zoom instruction. Our team of teachers has to ensure that collaborative projects, group activities, visual instruction, and one-to-one support can still take place. 

    A typical day in Middle School Math class might include an independent warm up, a live lesson, a group activity, and guided practice. Through animated Google Slides, instructor-created videos, and live instruction, teachers provide lessons in their own distinct styles, while continuing to develop relationships with their students. Teachers utilize apps to interact with individual students while maintaining social distancing; “jumping in” on a student’s screen to ensure they are carrying out steps correctly has been particularly helpful in Math classes. Zoom breakout rooms allow students, whether in the classroom or learning remotely, to explore new topics and learn from each other in small groups. 

    Throughout the year, our teachers will continue to adapt and implement more resources to support student learning.

    Re-Entry Updates - August 2020

    Dear Parents,

    I can’t tell you how often I’ve thought back to our final meeting on that Friday the 13th in March to share our plans for moving to our Distance Learning Model. Of all the messages I hoped to communicate that day, perhaps none was more important than the fact that while we may not have a playbook for a pandemic, we do have one for being a community. Indeed, it has been the strength of our community that has carried us this far, and has made the plans laid out in this document possible.

    A return to on-campus learning is by no means a return to normal. We are stepping into unchartered territory together, bolstered firmly by the strength of our community, the dedication and resolve of our teachers and staff, and the valuable partnership we enjoy with our families.

    We have provided families with a guide (view an abbreviated version here) that outlines the hybrid learning model we selected as being the most appropriate for our community, as well as a number of important policy updates and campus modifications. While the school has undertaken reasonable steps to lessen the risk of transmission of COVID-19 in its facilities, parents and staff are advised that participation in the school's programs carries with it certain inherent risks related to COVID-19 transmission that cannot be eliminated regardless of preventative actions taken by the school and its staff.  This plan can only work if everyone does their part.

    Sadly, we have experienced a recent uptick in the number of cases in our state, causing Governor Murphy to reduce the allowable number for indoor gatherings from 100 to 25. I share this context to underscore the important caveat that it is still early and things can change. As such, parents should be sure to have plans in place for a possible switch to an online start for the school year. Likewise, even if we open school as per the above plan, families will need to be prepared for a switch back to full-time online learning at any stage should the need arise for any reason.

    For your convenience, we have created this Parent Checklist for Success to assist you in preparing for the start of the new year.

    Finally, I wish to thank our school’s Board of Trustees, Leadership Team, and entire Faculty and Staff for their dedicated service on our various task forces. We are indeed a blessed community.

    Class of 2020 Supports Hoboken Relief Fund

    Dear Members of the Hoboken Community,

    Like many students who belong to the Class of 2020, our year at All Saints Episcopal Day School did not end quite as we had anticipated. This spring, we were scheduled to visit Ecuador, our big Eighth Grade trip. We have been fundraising for this trip since Fourth Grade and had raised $10,000 towards our travel and activities.

    Because of the pandemic, however, we were unable to travel to Ecuador. As a class, we decided that we wanted to donate the funds for our trip to a local organization. After lots of hard thinking and researching, we decided that the Hoboken Relief Fund is where we wanted our money to go. We are glad to be able to help support independently owned businesses and Hoboken residents who have or still are suffering from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope that if you own a small business in Hoboken or have applied for aid from the relief fund, our donation can help you. We know how important you all are to the Hoboken community, and we are happy to be able to help in any way we can.

  • Congratulations Class of 2020

    On June 11, All Saints celebrated the Class of 2020 at our first-ever virtual Eighth Grade Graduation Celebration. Family, friends, faculty, and staff cheered on the graduates (through the computer!) as they shared special memories of their time at the school and received recognition for their achievements. While the year did not end as expected with a trip to Ecuador, Last Hurrah, Field Day, among many other milestones, the students took it all in stride, demonstrating a maturity that will serve them well in high school.

    The graduates were accepted into an impressive group of high schools and many were awarded academic scholarships.

    Two Students Named Film Festival Finalists

    Two All Saints students have been named finalists in The Count Basie Teen and College Film Festival. Grade 7 student Penny is nominated for her stop motion animation, Life of a Plastic Cap. Evis, an Eighth Grader and winner of last year’s Best Documentary, is nominated for her short film, Let’s Support Girls’ Education.

    The Basie Center is proudly presenting all 27 selected films for free, public viewing at theBASIE.org. For one week beginning Monday, March 30, the general public will have a chance to not only view the films, but also cast their vote as part of the festival’s AUDIENCE CHOICE Award! Category winners will be announced on Monday, April 6 at noon.

    All Saints moved to a Distance Learning Model on March 17. This academic strategy will continue indefinitely and is being taken by All Saints out of an abundance of caution. Parents, please check emails from Ms. Singleton & the Parent Portal for more information.

    As we enter into this new and unexpected phase of our life together, it will be important for us to be creative about how we remain in community with one another. While we do not have a playbook for a pandemic, we do know how to build and sustain community.

  • All Saints Makes Finals in Ethics Bowl

    All Saints was represented by two teams at the New Jersey Middle School Ethics Bowl, hosted by the Ethics Institute at Kent Place School. The 14 students in Grades 7 and 8 competed against 21 NJAIS schools. Both our teams demonstrated exceptional poise, preparedness, and enthusiasm winning their cases in the first two rounds.

    One of our teams advanced to the finals against Kent Place. Our students performed thoughtfully and calmly. Although they finished in second place, the experience was abundantly positive and transformative. The students have already begun discussing their plan of action for returning to the Ethics Bowl next year!

    Spirit Day

    Dressed in All Saints colors, our students embraced the many meaningful activities on Spirit Day! As the culmination of our six-week Reading Olympics, students in every grade received their reading medals and joined in a Read-A-Thon. In addition, students in Grades 2-8 cheered on their classmates during the Second Annual Rap Battle. Contestants recited original work based on the theme of Sources of Inspiration. Some added music and choreography to their performance.

  • Shark Tank Panel Announces Winner

    The Business Club participated in a “Shark Tank” exercise to help sharpen their skills in product development, consumer research, marketing, and the overall business cycle.

    The five participating groups presented their products, which included beverage coasters, magnets, gemstones, stickers, and keychains, to the All Saints Sharks – Mr. Maurer, Mr. Neshan, and Ms. Rosenberg.

    The keychains won! Before they are produced and sold to the school community, the team will incorporate the best ideas from the other contestants to create an even better keychain.

    School-wide Spelling Bee Ends in Spell-Off

    This year’s All Saints Spelling Bee was so competitive it required “spell-off” on a second day! The top two contestants, Seventh Grader David and Sixth Grader Caroline, had to go beyond the initial list of 226 words in the Scripps study guide to spell challenging words, including dropsonde, Lascaux, and gallium. Caroline outlasted David and will go on to compete in the Hudson County Spelling Bee.

  • MLK Day - A Day of Inspiration & Service

    Every year, we partner with Mustard Seed School and Stevens Cooperative School to help the community. In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., MLK Day is a day of service and inspiration for our students and staff.

    While an optional day of school, many students participate in a variety of activities, led by teachers of all three schools, to impact the Hoboken community. This year, our students will be volunteering at the Hoboken Shelter, making sandwiches (in decorative bags with inspirational notes) for guests at St. Matthew’s Lunchtime Ministry, packaging bars of soaps for the Hoboken Shelter, and contributing to Global Art Exchange’s The Memory Project.

  • Annual Reading Olympics Has Commenced

    The start of the new year also brings the launch of the All Saints Reading Olympics! Students will spend the next six weeks reading in their free time and challenge themselves to earn a gold, silver, or bronze medal by reading requisite amounts of times in a variety of genres. The theme for this year's Reading Olympics is Diversity and Inclusion. Students in every grade participate in this annual tradition.
